Brazil is the nation officially referred to as the Federative Republic of Brazil and is located in the continent of South America.  In terms of geographical area, it is the fifth largest country, and it occupies nearly half of South America.  It is also the fifth most populous country and fourth most populous democratic country in the world.
In the East, Brazil is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean, and has a coastline of over seven thousand, four hundred and ninety-one kilometers, or over four and a half thousand miles.  In the north it is bordered by the countries of Venezuela, Suriname, Guyana and French Guiana.  Colombia borders Brazil on the northwest, Bolivia and Peru on the west, Argentina and Paraguay on the southwest, and Uruguay on the south.  There are also many archipelagos that are part of the Brazilian territory, including Fernando de Noronha, Rocas Atoll, Saint Peter and Paul Rocks, and Trindade and Martim Vaz.
Brazil was originally a colony of Portugal, from the time that Pedro Alvares Cabral landed there in 1500, and until it gained it independence in 1822.  It became first the independent Brazilian Empire, and then a republic in 1889.  Its bicameral legislature is now called the Congress, and dates back to 1824, when the very first constitution was ratified.  The current Constitution defines Brazil as a Federal Republic, and it is made up of twenty-six different states and five thousand, five hundred and sixty-four municipalities.
Brazil has the world’s tenth largest economy terms of market exchange rates and the ninth largest economy in terms of purchasing power.  It is also a founding member of the United Nations and of the Union of South American Nations.
The Brazilian population is predominantly Roman Catholic, and the society is multiethnic.  The national language is Portuguese.  Brazil is home to diverse wildlife and natural resources, and has a wide range of natural resources that it has gone to great lengths to protect in various habitats.
Because Brazil is comprised of such a large geographic area, the weather conditions, climates, geography, and ecosystems vary widely.  For this reason, Brazil is home to an abundance of different plants and animals.
Brazil’s human population is as widely varied as its natural landscape.  A great many religious and cultural traditions, as well as ethnic backgrounds are represented in Brazil.
Brazil has many subdivisions.  The Brazilian Constitution of 1988 stated that Brazil is comprised of one federal district, twenty six different states, and then all of the various municipalities.  It also specified that no one unit had the right to secede from the federation.  The states and divided into regions: the North region, the Northeast region, the Central-West region, the Southwest Region, and the South Region.
The most popular sport in Brazil is football, also referred to in America as soccer.  The music, food, and clothing of the country are widely diverse, due to its varied and ethnic population.  The currency is the real, their motto is “Order and Progress”, the capital is Brasilia and the capital is Sao Paulo.  Brazil is a truly fascinating nation.
