Rio de Janeiro is not the largest city in Brazil, but many people consider it to be a gem along the ocean that is unlike any other. It has become famous for being a romantic destination for couples and a fun place to get away on vacation for families and groups. It has been immortalized in movies and in songs and for good reason. If you go to Rio de Janeiro it is sure to leave a lasting impression on you as it has for so many people before.
One of the most iconic images of Rio de Janeiro is the statue of Christ the Redeemer that stands at the top of Corcovado Mountain. It is considered a must-see piece of history for people that travel to Rio. Also on the must-see list should be the Sugar Loaf cable car, which offers views of the foliage, mountains, the ocean and the city that simply cannot be seen any other way than helicopter. The cable cars are perfectly safe and have never had a casualty. You may feel a little nervous when you first get on but soon you will forget how high up you are as your breath is taken away by the view.
Rio is also known for its wild and elaborate Carnival celebrations. Carnival is celebrated all over Brazil, but in Rio it is especially wild and festive. The streets are alive with dancers that are wearing every color of the rainbow and a few more than that, with painted bodies and smiling faces. It is something that you will never forget if you get the chance to experience it. Also known for its New Year’s celebrations, Rio swells at this time of year and literally millions of people gather on the beaches and in the clubs to ring in the New Year in style. The City of Samba is a newer attraction to visitors of Rio, and it celebrates the tradition of dance and music that has been passed down from the first African slaves and transformed by the different ethnic groups that have grown to love this unique piece of culture.
Certainly some of the most alluring attractions of Rio de Janeiro are its famous beaches. Places like Ipanema and Copacabana are well known and their reputation as colorful and stunning places to see the human and the natural scenery are well-deserved.
Like many large cities, there exists a certain amount of crime and violence in Rio. For the most part it is related to gang activity that happens in the shanty towns on the outskirts of the city but it inevitably spills over into the city and the tourist areas. There are pickpockets around so if you are there make sure to keep your valuables safe and out of sight. If you take the proper precautions you will be able to enjoy Rio de Janeiro for its natural and man-made splendor. Make sure to bring a good pair of sunglasses and apply sun block accordingly.
