Weather in Brazil

It is difficult to say that the weather in Brazil is a certain way; the country is enormous in terms of land mass.  It is actually the fifth largest country on the planet in terms of its size and therefore the weather is not the same everywhere in Brazil.  There are actually five different climatic subtypes.  One thing is for sure though; if you are thinking of packing your winter jacket you probably won’t need it unless you are wearing it to and from the airport on the way to Brazil.

In the Northern parts of Brazil, the weather is fairly steady all year round.  The temperature can be called equatorial and it is indeed very warm all the time.  The rainfall in this part of the country does vary but not to a great extent.  It comes fairly steadily all year round and there is little change in the temperature from season to season.

The Northeast is often more like a desert than an equatorial forest.  It could be characterized as a semi-arid desert.  If you go farther inland, you will experience more rainfall but unlike the Northern areas the rainfall here is very seasonal.

The Central part of Brazil is mostly savanna, and the rainfall is seasonal as well.  The trees and the long grasses of the savanna thrive in this climate and the average temperature is around 25 degrees Celsius.

If you go to the South of Brazil the temperature is much different.  It is cooler and the difference between the night and the daytime temperature is more noticeable.  The average temperature here is about eighteen degrees.  Areas in the South that are higher in altitude can actually experience frost and occasionally even snow.

In the area where there is the most tourism and by far the most people, there are differences in the seasons.  This is the area in the Southeast where both Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo are located.  The high season or warmer season lasts from about December to March.  It is the summer season for Rio, but you can also experience some rainfall during this time.  Luckily there is a lot to do there so you won’t likely be bored.  In the low season it can be a little cooler, about 70 degrees Fahrenheit.  This can be too cool for some people looking for a beach vacation but the advantage is that the beaches will be a little less crowded.

If you are planning on traveling to Brazil, it might be helpful to locate the city you are going to be traveling to and check the weather conditions on the internet before you go.  You will get not only an idea of what the daytime and nighttime high temperatures are but also how much rain you are likely to experience.  One thing that is always true is that the sun near the equator can catch you by surprise so you should take great caution to stay protected especially if you are fair-skinned.
