Brazilian Cities
Most of us know about the rainforests in Brazil and about the incredible Amazon River, but not many people are aware of the number of great cities that are found in Brazil. In total there are fourteen cities in Brazil that have a population greater than one million, and they all have something to offer to tourists and citizens alike.
Sao Paulo is by far the largest city in Brazil. You might have thought it would be Rio de Janeiro because we hear so much about it, but Sao Paulo is about twice the size, depending on whose statistics you use. It is the seat of the financial world in Brazil, and it flourishes with art, theatre and music. As you can imagine with a major financial power, one of the things that brings Sao Paulo to the forefront as a tourist destination is that it has all of the amenities that a traveler might be looking for. It receives many people that are there on business and find that it is also a beautiful and immense city. Sao Paulo is actually the largest city in the Southern Hemisphere. If you are planning to visit Sao Paulo, try to plan your trip so that you can enjoy the Art Biennial or the Sao Paulo Fashion Week.
Rio de Janeiro might be the most famous of the Brazilian Cities. The photographs of the statue of Christ standing on Corcovado Mountain have made it an icon and a destination for many travelers. Rio is known also for its Carnival Celebrations (although Carnival is celebrated all over Brazil) and its magnificent beaches. The city itself is also very large, coming in second in the Southern Hemisphere to Sao Paulo in both population and the size of its economy. Beaches like the Copacabana and Ipanema have become famous and deservedly so. They are white sandy beaches that are deep and filled with people enjoying the tropical climate and blue waters.
If you are looking for something a little quieter than Sao Paulo or Rio, Salvador might be the right choice. It is known for being a little more laid back and for its more relaxed pace. If you are an architecture buff, then Salvador has much to offer in terms of sightseeing. There are also many options for things like theatre and food in Salvador.
Brasilia is the capital city of Brazil, and would also be a good choice for the traveler that is interested in sightseeing and history. It is located near the center of the country so it is also possible to include it in your travel itinerary if you plan to see more than one Brazilian city. Brasilia has been declared as a World Heritage Site and there are many things to see and do in the city. Brasilia is known for its many festivals, and as the capital contains all of the embassies of different nations and is culturally diverse.
Brazil is a vast and captivating land and there are so many cities to see and enjoy. If you are planning to go pick one or two that you would like to see. Since you will probably be back again you can choose others for your next trip.
