Carnival Traditions

This is maybe the reason Brazil so well known by foreigners, the carnival in Brazil is a huge and intense party, the festival is very rich in what concerns details, preparation, professionalism and dedication. The carnival usually lasts for a week, even though most people party on the carnival for much longer than that we could say. As a matter of fact, there is a saying in Brazil that the year only really starts after the Carnival, some would consider it true.

Most people don’t know the following, Carnival is actually a competition in Brazil, many “Samba” schools disputes for the title of champion of the carnival, it’s actually a very rich industry, the schools are huge and they generate many and many jobs. The schools spend the whole year training and preparing themselves for the carnival, manufacturing the fantasies, writing the music and developing the concept, when the carnival finally come you can clearly see their passion for it and their will to win the champion title, to tell truth the competition they have in the carnival makes it even more charming and exciting.

The official and most famous competitions are heldion Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, not between those states, each state holds it’s own competition between their own schools. Rio de Janeiro is considered the biggest one. We could point a few of the most famous schools, those would, Mangueria, Beija-Flor, Salgueiro and many others, people are loyal to their schools, it’s not very different from football, their passion is the same. The competition is really dynamic in both states, there’s favorite for the title, every year is different as the schools must present a new concept, which totally changes the fantasies, cars, choreography, music and etc. There is an internationally known singer originated from Beija-Flor’s samba school, his artistic name is “Neguinho da Beija-Flor”, he is one of the most respected samba singers in Brazil.

If you’re not looking for competitions and all you want it to party you will have a great time as well. Rio de Janeiro has a great carnival to offer you, at many places, as well as São Paulo, now concerning partying, the best city would be Fortaleza, that’s where the most animated and exciting carnival parties takes place. Most tourists don’t get to visit Fortaleza, as they prefer to watch the competitions at Rio or São Paulo, both most Brazilians prefers Fortaleza’s carnival party over all other cities, people from all over the country travels to Fortaleza to party there.

All in all, it doesn’t matter what you’re looking for, you can find it in Brazil. If you’re amazed by Carnival’s culture and you’re dying to watch the competition between the schools you can visit either Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo, if you’re looking for animated and exciting parties, you can visit Fortaleza, you will be able to find a different party in each street.
